“A Prayer for Owen Meany suffers from many of the same faults as some other Irving books. It seems in dire need for an editor to cut down on its rambling in places. However, somewhere in the midst of the long detailed passages, the characters emerge vividly.
Owen Meany is the only son of a granite quarry owner in New Hampshire. He is best friends with narrator Johnny Wheelwright, a somewhat “average” member of the small town aristocracy. Owen is anything but average— he’s a dwarf, his voice is permanently pitched to a scream, he’s a genius at any number of academic subjects, and he’s a genius at faith.
This is one of the most satisfying books I’ve read in a long time. It isn’t perfect by any means but when I closed this book I felt like everything had come together. There wasn’t a single thread of Owen’s story that was left unresolved. And I guess that was the point. :)
