“This was my first exposure to Travis McGee after hearing much about the character and having MacDonald's books recommended to me. I was hesitant about reading this because I had been told that it had humorous elements. I am often turned off to humor when it is mixed with a genre I prefer to be serious. The book had moments of humor, usually in the observations of the main character, but overall was a good hard-boiled detective story with likable characters and nasty villains. Although it had moments of darkness, there wasn't the overall sense of doom that is evident in other books of the genre. The plot held my interest and made me want to turn the page to see what happens. It was also a very quick read -- perfect for my morning and evening commutes. I have the next book in the series on my shelf ready to be read and I look forward to a long association with both the author and Travis McGee.”
