The first section of this novel, “Summer 1958,” is John Irving’s best work. It’s mature, unpredictable, compassionate, sweet and sour, with lovely, elegiac prose. Alas, things spiral very much out of control. But oh, that Summer of ’58…..!

The story is all over the place and is bloated with boring details that take away from the story... it is everything I can do to finish it.

Entertaining to read but a little too graphic.

One of Irving's better efforts. He takes us into the mind of the novelist in terms of what motivates plot and character.

Another disturbing book that I love.

Well written, full of good depictions of the work of a writer... but somewhat loose as far as the plot is concerned. Ruth is a great character but she is not enough to hold everything on her shoulders.

Almost like several books within a book. Too much time spent giving lots of background for minor characters. But a great book none-the-less.

The first portion of the novel was far more gripping than the second half.

I'm a huge John Irving fan but this one stands out from the rest. It has some of the usual silliness of Irving's writing but this one is much more relatable and the plot comes full circle in the end and leaves you feeling really satisfied that this is a beautiful and remarkable piece of writing.
