The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason

by Sam Harris

Sam Harris cranks out blunt, hard-hitting chapters to make his case for why faith itself is the most dangerous element of modern life. And if the devil's in the details, then you'll find Satan waiting at the back of the book in the very substantial notes section where Harris saves his more esoteric discussions to avoid sidetracking the urgency of his message.
Interestingly, Harris is not... (read more)

Overview: Groups

Seekers 197 books / 451 members / 1772 posts This is a group for those who seek to know the truth about how to live their lives. To join together in the quest for wisdom and the "meaning of life". We will read books that will open our eyes to new ideas, and this group will be a safe place for all to share their thoughts, no matter how outlandish or unconventional they may be. The only rule is to respect the ideas of others and to acknowledge where they are in their life search, that no one is absolutely right in their views, but we are all searching and have the right to search for new thought.

Dawkinism 79 books / 151 members / 123 posts Prof. Richard Dawkins (born March 26, 1941) is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science writer who holds the Charles Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford.

Dawkins first came to prominence with his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", which popularised the gene-centered view of evolution and introduced the term "meme", helping found the field of memetics. In 1982, he made a widely-cited contribution to the science of evolution with the theory, presented in his book "The Extended Phenotype", that phenotypic effects are not limited to an organism's body but can stretch far into the environment, including into the bodies of other organisms. He has since written several best-selling popular books specially "The God Delusion", and appeared in numerous television and radio programmes, concerning evolutionary biology, creationism, and religion.

In the group, we review his works and idea, and we share our viewpoints about him.

Mrs. Gaetano's English Class, Period 1, Third Quarter 29 books / 21 members / 141 posts Welcome to your third quarter outside reading book project! Your first attempt at Shelfari was wonderful. We are going to change things a little bit and try to grow in our responses to the literature. 1. I would like you to write a book review where you explain what is going on in the book. Notice, this is not a plot summary, but an overview of what a reader should expect as she reads the book. Please look on shelfari.com for a review of your book. It should help you understand what you should include in your project. 2. Along with the review I would like you to include a quote that exemplifies the character, a theme, or the understanding of the book. 3. Finally, I want you to end this review with a recommendation. Who would like this book? What other books can you relate your book to? After you are done with this recommendation I would like you to comment on your classmates’ reviews. This requires you to make a thoughtful comment and to ask a question. You are required to respond to at least three people. Please look at the project wrap-up for the last quarter to see some truly exemplary examples.

Just for Atheists 46 books / 51 members / 631 posts Hello, we wanted a group that was for atheists and agnostics where we could discuss the topics that effect our lives. We have tried other ones on Shelfari and met some terrific people, but we have also met entirely too many people there just to attempt to convert us 'heathens.' This has become tiresome. So we have started a more exclusive group to try to fix this problem. We hope to breach topics relevent to the 'enlightened', please come and add your distinctiveness to our own. If any missionaries get through please let the administrators know.
