“"The kiss she had been dying for didn't come. She opened her eyes because nothing had happened, except for the rustling sound of a tree branch. Daniel was gone. She sighed, crestfallen but not surprised. What was strange was that she could almost see the path he'd taken back through the forest. As if she were some kind of hunter who could pinpoint the rotation of a leaf and let it lead her back to Daniel."
Really? Really.
I spent a lot of time arching one eyebrow as I read this book. I also had quite the time trying not to fall asleep. The 'romance' in this book... I don't even know if I'd call it cheesy. It's such a flat struggle of a thing it reminds me of an ant carrying the corpse of a friend back home to the ant hill to feast on. Luce is so obsessed with Daniel I cannot stop sighing and rolling my eyes. The idea of it is there - were it written better, a great deal better, I could've tolerated it. But I just couldn't take it seriously. Luce loses about 90% of her character, whether good or bad, to her Daniel obsession. Yes, she's attached to him through their pasts, but she cannot even think. If Daniel comes up, nothing else matters. This is not romantic to me, though it is frustrating.
Then there's Cam. What a useless character he is. The whole point of him for 70% of the book is giving Daniel something to comment on, providing him a little ground to be jealous. Luce otherwise barely gives Cam a thought, even after he slinks further into the plot.
For Luce, there is only Daniel. Luce must stalk him with her every free moment - research him, pine after him.
By chapter 12, I was just so weary of it that I'm surprised I ended up finishing the book. By the time Daniel started treating Luce civil, like a human being, she just got more obsessive. It got even worse! I wasn't sure it was possible. But I still think Daniel is a douche. A love story between two characters, neither of which have any redeeming qualities... that was basically the book for me. My spark of hope that when Daniel flipped Luce off in the beginning that maybe she would hate him (and make things interesting) died so very quickly. She was mad for about a second. But she can't stay mad, no matter how badly she is treated, because Daniel is so sexy-gorgeous!
I don't know if this book was worth finishing. To each their own, I suppose, but this story did nothing for me. One plus is I learned exactly what type of book I want to hastily avoid in the future...”
