I had mixed feelings when I picked up this book. Honestly, it's been in my TBR pile for a long time. People were so obsessed with this series, and I was afraid to read it because I knew I might not like it. I didn't want to be bashed for not liking what everyone else liked. After all that calmed down, a new wave of people who despised the series came to my attention. Well, I didn't quite fit in with them either. It certainly wasn't my favorite book, but it also wasn't the worst I've ever read.
The majority of this book was incredibly dull. The first 3/4 were about a ridiculous "love triangle" that happened WAY too fast, in my opinion. The last 1/4 of the book finally picked up and caught my attention. That's when I changed my mind a little and thought that maybe this could be a decent story. The storyline isn't bad at all. The build-up to the action was, though.
I didn't feel any real connection to the characters. Luce was annoying. She had no depth and absolutely zero personality. She was just stupid. Instead of taking a hint when Daniel gives her the finger, Luce is obsessed with Daniel. And she absolutely has to know everything about him. She's so obsessed that she's goes as far as breaking into the school's records room to search through his personal files. I mean, come on. Grow a backbone! Quit falling all over yourself just because this guy's attractive. He doesn't like you!
Daniel is equally obnoxious, with his brooding and mysterious aura. He's a complete jerk to Luce from the start, and she can't help but swoon over him because of it! (Does this ring any bells for anyone else? Am I the only one imagining a certain sparkling vampire and his idiot girlfriend here?) And Cam is a pain in the butt from the start as well. While he's not a jerk like Daniel, he makes up for that by being overly persistent. If the girl doesn't want you and your creepy necklace, accept it and move on. I honestly, cannot find a single decent thing to say about these characters. They were all TERRIBLE.
Overall, this book was a bit of a let down. The characters had no depth and the story was nonexistent. Hundreds of pages were wasted on Luce stalking Daniel and avoiding Cam. It was ridiculously boring. The only thing that earned this book two stars was the potential I saw at the end. When the story actually picked up, I saw the possibility of a decent story. Currently, I plan to finish the series (I hate not finishing things). We'll see how Torment goes.”
“Not great, but not terrible either. I liked it enough to continue reading the series.”
