I could not put this down, but the story is kind of bothersome.

Another very honest story by Augusten Burroughs. I probably should have given it five stars, it should at least get 4.5. A tale of alcoholism and attempting to overcome a bad childhood. Definitely one that was hard to put down.

Great book about addiction. I enjoy Augusten's 'dry' sense of humor in this book.

Good but not as compelling as Running With Scissors.

Reality is sometimes stronger than fiction. Had it been a fiction novel, it may have begun when the main character hit rock bottom. This was not the story Burroughs told. Readers are shown, through his struggles, that there are many levels between bottom and rock bottom and that much can happen in between.

His style demands that the reader continue turning pages. Shifting between the different threads of his life, we need to know what will happen next. Despite wonderfully descriptive attention to detail, some things are left to the readers imagination. Burroughs could probably have doubled the length of this book without detracting from its readability.

Companion pieces would probably be any of Burroughs other works, (I am headed here next), but the flavor of this book is very similar to James Frey's Million Little Pieces. I would strongly recommend this title for anyone in tenth, or even ninth grade or above and through into adulthood.
