“I'm coming in late with this reply, since I only just read Middlesex myself and absolutely loved it. If you are still looking for a book to read for your school project (or even if you're not), I would highly recommend Virginia Woolf's "Orlando." I feel sure that Eugenides must have read it and been influenced by it in his writing of "Middlesex."”
