Characters/People edit see section history

  • Jason Fireson: Jason is the eldest of the three Fireson brothers. He is handsome and daring, and beloved by many people. He and his brother Whit are bank robbers—Jason has been involved in crime from a young age, when he became a bootlegger during Prohibition. He has a girlfriend, Darcy, and does not enjoy the romanticization of the robbers' image.
  • Weston Fireson: Weston Fireson is the middle brother in the Fireson family, and the only brother not involved in crime. He tries to get legitimate jobs, but during the Depression this often leaves him unemployed. He is bitter towards his brothers for leaving him as the only one home to care for the family.
  • Darcy Windham: Darcy Windham is the beautiful daughter of Jasper Windham, the owner of a car company. Her relationship with her father is not on the best terms, and she is romantically involved with Jason Fireson, which her father does not approve of.
  • Whit Fireson: Whit Fireson is the youngest, and angriest, Fireson brother. He and Jason are the two bank robbers in the family, and while Jason hates the media attention White basks in it. White has communist sympathies and loves the idea that they are Depression-era Robin Hoods. He has a wife, Veronica, who he met while living in a Hooverville, and a son, Patrick.
  • Marriner Skelty: Marriner Skelty is Jason and Whit's mentor who Jason met while in prison on a bootlegging charge. He used to be part of the Firefly Gang, but retired.
  • Veronica: Veronica is Whit's wife, and has raised their young son almost entirely on her own. Their relationship is haphazard; he leaves her frequently, but almosts returns. She met Whit while they were living in a Hooverville together, and she and Darcy have never liked each other.
  • Cary Delaney: Cary Delaney is the government agent in charge of capturing or killing the Firefly Gang, and the occasional first-person narrator of the story. He is not a policeman, but a lawyer, and does not believe that the brothers are alive for much of the book.
  • Gunnison: Add a description of this character.
  • Rufus: Rufus is the name Darcy gives to a thug who is hired by Brickbat Sanders, a former partner of the Firefly brothers.
