“Started on January 9th, ended on January 24th.
The book, at the start, is rather boring. The narrator is spending a lot of time 'talking' about the profession of butler and it's hard to see any interest in it. In Never Let Me Go, the narrator was spending a lot of time explaining her job as well but this was exactly the interesting part, there was something twisted in her job even though we couldn't say exactly what without reading further. But, in this case, the job of butler is as straight as it could be. The book is starting to be somewhat interesting only after the middle of the book and is far more interesting towards the end of the book only. Only then can you witness how Ishiguro masters the art of storytelling, how he can make us believe in a character lost in memories. I would dare say that only the last tenth of the book is worth but it's really worth a lot and everything sort of makes sense. Especially when Mr. Cardinal arrives at Darlington Hall and everything that follows. I think I would rate the last pages five stars but I was so bored by the first half of the book that I almost gave up on it… So I can hardly rate it more than three stars.”
