  • bistoury: A long, narrow surgical knife used for opening abscesses.
  • debride: To surgically remove foreign matter or dead tissue from a wound.
  • tocar: A surgical instrument for removing fluid from bodily cavities, consisting of a puncturing device situated inside a tube.
  • autoclave: An apparatus for sterilizing surgical instruments by means of steam under pressure.
  • greenstick: An incomplete fracture of a long bone in which one side of a bone is broken while the other is bent.
  • auscultation: The act of listening, either directly or through a stethoscope or other instrument, to sounds within the body as a method of diagnosis.
  • spirometer: An instrument for determining the capacity of the lungs.
  • anodyne: A medicine that relieves or alleviates pain.
  • nostrum: A medicine sold with false or exaggerated claims and with no demonstrable value.
  • mesentery: The membrane that surrounds the intestines, attaching them to the posterior wall of the abdomen, maintaining them in position in the abdominal cavity, and supplying them with blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics.
  • cecum: A large pouch forming the beginning of the large intestine. The appendix and the ileum of the small intestine both connect to the cecum.
  • peritoneum: The membrane that lines the walls of the abdomen and the pelvis and encloses the abdominal and pelvic organs.
  • stertor: A heavy snoring sound accompanying respiration in certain diseases.
  • venesection: The surgical incision into a vein for the letting of blood.
  • calomel: A white, tasteless powder consisting chiefly of mercurous chloride used chiefly as a purgative.
  • digitalis: A drug prepared from the dried leaves or seeds of the foxglove, used medicinally to treat heart failure and some abnormal heart rhythms.
