There is a powerful story here of a girl, Rachel, who survived a horrendous event. The author explores both interracial identity crisis and intraracial racism with realness. The narrative is fragmented into chapters that are told from the perspectives of Rachel, Jamie aka Brick a boy who witnessed the tragic event and holds keys to Rachel's past, Nella Rachel's Danish mother, Roger, and Laronne Nella's employer and really only friend.
I really liked this book however I cannot give it more than three and a half stars.
There is something missing within the story. The characters are well developed however I wish there was more about Brick's life on the streets. I wanted to see more happen for Rachel. The ending was abrupt, there was this climax and building of suspense into nothing. Do not let this deter you from reading. Despite my issues with some of the story development I could not put it down. Durrow's writing is inspiring and lyrical at times. She is surely an author to read again.
