William, a peaceful Cistercian monk becomes a Knight Templar through a series of terrible events that change his life. Before he can travel to the Holy Land and join the Templars he must finance his trip. He opts for jousting, and in the process helps his brother Richard escape a plot by their overlord's son. They both end up at Pilgrim Castle in the Holy Land and after grueling training go their separate ways: Richard as a fanatical fundamentalist, and William a mystic who joins the secret Brotherhood. Eventually their paths merge as the Holy Land falls to the Turkish advance. As William becomes more entrenched in the Brotherhood, he learns how what he's witnessing has been set in motion by powers in Europe. Rather than remaining a pawn, he becomes a key player in the events that lead to the apparent destruction of the Knight Templar Order, but is in fact a deceit, part of a secret war against France's king and his puppet pope.

The novel describes real events and real people. The fictional characters are likewise based on real Templars.

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Otto De Grandson: A Swiss-born top counselor to England's King Edward I, Otto was instrumental in the founding of Switzerland. He was also a senior member of "The Brotherhood." The novel is basically his story, how he managed to manipulate the Templars into fighting a secret war that effectively stopped France's Philip IV from dominating Europe and ending Otto's dream of freedom for his homeland
  • Brother Hughes: A fictional character based on the profile of a real Templar. He was cunning and ruthless. The architect of one of history's most decisive battles where infantry defeated cavalry for the first time in Europe.
  • Brother William: The novel's main character. Like Hughes, he's based on a real Templar. William starts out as a Cistercian monk, a pacifist who must become a warrior. The conflict strengthens him, he grows through his struggle to stay true to his principles. He eventually becomes Grandmaster of The Brotherhood. Always in conflict with his best friend Hughes who is so similar yet so different from him.
  • Richard: Richard is William's brother. He joins the Templars as the result of his clash with his overlord's son, who as a prank raped his ladylove. Years later, after his Templar career, he comes back and with the help from Hughes and his brother rights the wrongs done to him in his youth.
  • John: John is William's uncle, the mythical figure who had set out to find the Jesus Gospel and never came back. William sets out to find him and the Gospel, which in real life is the Holy Grail of legend.
  • Brother Dimas: Brother Dimas was at one point William's superior officer while at Pilgrim Castle. Dimas, with Hughes' help, engineers the historic exodus from Pilgrim castle to Cyprus, one of the several Templar mysteries this novel explores.
  • Farwell: Farwell is Richard's nemesis, the man who raped his girlfriend as a prank, a story plucked out of history's pages.
  • King Philip: King Philip "the fair" or more accurately "The beautiful" was the king who set out to destroy the Knights Templar with the aid of his puppet pope. He succeeded only on the surface. In reality the Templars conducted a very successful secret war against him.
  • King Edward: King Edward "Long Shanks" of England was brash, impetuous and not very bright, yet Otto served him faithfully, and as it turns out, used him for his own ends, the founding of Switzerland and the reintroduction of democracy in Europe, which led to the founding of the United States. A true and magnificent story that needed to be to told.
