Just before their trip to the Czech Republic to attend Goth-Fest, best friends Joy & Roxy decide to ask "The Goddess" for a little help in finding their true loves. Unfortunately for Joy, what she winds up with is a creepy premonition about a dark & dangerous stranger. At first she doesn't believe in the premonitions or in vampires at all, but as the visions get stronger and more detailed she becomes convinced there might be something to them. Who's making her see these visions? Is it the sexy and strong Raphael? The gorgeous but reserved, Christian? Or someone else all together?

The first thing I have to point out is that the back of the book has basically nothing to do with the book, so don't use it in your judgment to read it or not. Despite that fact that the book wasn't quite what I expected, I really enjoyed the read. It was some light, mindless fun with sexy, sizzling romance thrown in for good measure. I found the main character (Joy) likable and very funny. I would have liked to see a little more character development, however. I do definitely intend to continue with the rest of the series. Here is a list of the Dark Ones series in order:

    1. A Girl's Guide to Vampires
    2. Sex and the Single Vampire
    3. Sex, Lies and Vampires
    4. Even Vampires Get the Blues
    5. The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires
    6. Zen and the Art of Vampires

Joy and Roxy head to Czech Republic, home of the author of their favorite books, the Dark Ones. Could have been a great story, but alas, it wasn't. It seemed like the whole story was written with too much (too much angst, too much jumping to conclusions, too much flightiness from Roxy, etc). 111308

This was a so so novel for me. The idea of a vampire having to find their "beloved" is original but Joy as a character isn't very likable and neither is her friend Roxy. Joy is very one dimensional and seems to always have the perfect line and she nor Roxy doesn't seem wary of the so called vampires.

I have enjoyed Macalister's other work better. This one was kind of weak.

I enjoyed this one a lot! In some ways it kept you guessing as to what would happen, and in other ways it was a bit predictable. Left me wanting to read Christians' story, though. Is that one out there and I've missed it?

This was the first book I have read by Katie Macalister and I have to say I wasn’t really that impressed. Now I should say that I am not a big romance novel fan unless of course there is more plot than torrid love scenes and the heroine is neither vapid nor spineless and the hero isn’t a total ass. Unfortunately the lead, Joy Randall, is neither witty nor intelligent and the hero is a one dimensional stereotypical bore. I didn’t like Joy, her friend Roxy *ugh*, or any of the other poorly executed characters. Roxy was particularly horrible and I vaguely wished that Davidson’s Queen Betsy would walk in and punch her. This is a mostly fluff run of the mill bodice ripper albeit with some fangs thrown in. Save your money and pick up Kim Harrison, Laurell K Hamilton, Nancy Collins or Charlaine Harris instead.

A Girl's Guide to Vampires was a nice and pleasant surprise. While I do get tired of Katie MacAlister's same heroine in every book I read, I could tolerate Joy more that most others. But lord can they be moronic, and not in a good way. I do wish she could expand her female leads to be different in both of their physical and mental aspects, and not be the same old monotonous ones over and over again. Always my gripe.

Now on to the rest of the book...
The storyline was interesting, there was some hilarious moments, and overall I enjoyed it better than most of the contemporary romances Ms. MacAlister has written. I am very intrigued by Christian and can't wait to read his book in this series. Roxy, on the other hand, reminded me of a little, annoying, rabid yappy dog. Yes, she could provide entertainment, but if I knew someone like that, I'd go insane, or else commit homicide. Otherwise the book was fine entertainment but not a keeper for me. Probably the main reason I read the whole book was because of the intriguing Christian and wondering about his fate.

I don't really remember much about this book except that it was a struggle to get through and I was disappointed upon finishing it. I know it didn't live up to the hype I'd heard about it or its author.
