  • Statesman: Marcus Cole, the leader of the Freedom Phalanx and main character. He and his best friend/adopted brother received their powers from the Well of the Furies simultaneously, though Marcus obtained the powers of Zeus and Stefan was imbued with the power and spirit of Hades.
  • Lord Recluse: Stefan Richter, main antagonist and leader of Arachnos. He and Marcus served together in World War I and formed a band of high-profile thieves to make a living after the war ended.

The first handful of chapters take place in a number of places throughout the world as Marcus and Stefan's band of thieves pilfer artifacts which offer clues to discovering the Well of the Furies. The rest of the novel occurs in a fictional city in Rhode Island.
