The Cat in the Hat

by Dr. Seuss

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read... (read more)

Ozappa! Books for ESL Learners 32 books / 38 members / 58 posts Reading is a great way to improve your English. It doesn't have to be hard work either. Choose a book that looks interesting and not too hard to read. You should be looking for a book that has 2-5 words per page that are unfamiliar. Dictionary use is discouraged. Only use it when you are really stumped and/or really want to know the meaning.

I am basing my selection on what has worked for my own kids (growing up in a bilingual environment) and also on the experience of my students in Tokyo who are coming to English from a wildly different language.

When you've finished a book, let us know what you thought of your experience. Do not worry about mistakes!!!!!! We just want to hear your ideas.

Catholic Homeschooling Classical and Otherwise 242 books / 12 members / 9 posts Hi all! This group is dedicated to certain concepts in home-based education:

That it is the duty of parents to educate their children, not foist this off on other people, after all what other human agency can claim to love your child better than you;

That a Catholic child must receive a holistic Catholic education, not just a religion subject attatched to a secular curriculum;

That Classical Education is a true and tried method of teaching children with a track record stretching back into antiquity, not just because some lobby group has the ear and pocket of the school board;

That personalized education is the end result of home education: that the curriculum must be made to fit the child, not the child to the curriculum;

That when raising Catholic children, parenting must start out structured and then leeway slowly given as the children mature and gain more responsibility, not laissez-faire attention to discipline as children then cracking down when they are too old to accept your authority;

That subjects are best learned in a methodological structure and taught incrementally, building each lesson upon the last; and

That above all things, the content must be either Catholic in worldview or at least non-contradictory to the Catholic Faith. Philosophies of the moment must be tested against the Faith of the Ages, not the reverse.

Recommended Books for Family Reading 328 books / 11 members / 2 posts We want to encourage children, teens, and parents to enjoy reading; to read for fun and to read together. Please recommend fiction and nonfiction books for their authorship and/or illustrations. Also, include books that are good read-aloud books. The best are a little higher level than what the child can read, but not too advanced. Older children will love chapter books and will eagerly wait for the next family reading time.

We also recommend books by DK Publishing, Eyewitness Books, and Usborne Books.
