“OK, I really liked parts of this, disliked other parts, and was really put off by other parts. The good: I very much enjoyed the details of the animal behavior studies. This is why I read the book. I find details of human and animal behavior quite interesting and I find it fascinating at the range of behaviors animal's are capable of. The bad: This was no surprise, but evolution, evolution, evolution. The ugly: De Wall's conclusions about religion. Judeo-Christian religions are the only ones that treat man as distinct from animals because they began in a region where apes were not found. Anyone who grew up around apes would realize man is not significantly different from them and thus we are not special. Wow! This is an impressive leap in logic and extremely belittling of Judeo-Christian beliefs, neither of which is particularly surprising considering the source.”
