Liked It“This is a great collection of fantasy/mystery short stories. Normally, I am not a fantasy fan, but this story collection is great.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“i found the stories too short and that made a lot of them bland. i bought this book because 2 of my fave authors, simon green and charlaine harris, wrote stories in it.... but even theirs were too short and boring. i had the hardest time finishing this one.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I read this initially for the Sookie Stackhouse story by Charlaine Harris and that turned out to be one of the weaker entries. None of the stories were bad, but very few were memorable. I thought that Lovely by John Straley and The Boy Who Chased Seagulls by Michael Armstrong were the most interesting--if you don't mind a sizable dose of "ick factor". The other stories are all fine, enjoyable reads but they don't offer much in the way of freshness or innovation. This would be good at the beach or to read while traveling.”

I've only read 2 stories, but I have read the Sookie Stackhouse story that is in the book and it is a really good short story about the fairies in the Series Claudine and Claude.”

Like all short-story collection some are better than others. Among the very good stories were Simon R. Green, Anne Bishop, and Laura Ann Gillman. One story was very good but seemed out of place as it was clearly a sci-fi mystery. ”

Only a couple of them were the kind of short stories that are one small step up from poetry in the navel-gazing, see-how-clever-I-am category that makes me hesitant about the whole idea of short stories. I bought this one for the Anne Bishop story, and didn't even plan to read it shortly after Dreams Made Flesh. Fate loves me. Anyway, the Anne Bishop story was worth it--the others--the good ones, that is, were just frosting.”

While I have not read the rest of the stories in this book, I can say that Charlaine Harris' story Fairy Dust was great. It gives you a look at two of the characters in her Sookie Stackhouse series. Claudine and Claude are searching for answers to why their sister has died and they ask for help from Sookie. Does Sookie help find out what happend? Well, read the story to find out. I also recomend that you read the Sookie books (starting with Dead Until Dark) to find out more about Sookie and find out where Claudine and Claude come into her story. I'm sure you will enjoy them.”
