A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. The recent discovery of the first half of Twain's manuscript, long thought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and other variations present in the first half of the handwritten manuscript, as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manuscript pages, is indispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manuscript indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write an even darker, more confrontational book than the one he finally published.

I totally agree that this is the greatest American novel ever written. I've read it 4 times and find something new each time. I'm probably due to read it again

Katya..if you click on 'see book description' in blue under the title (at the top of this page) it should come up with a page that will tell you what the book is about.

In a nutshell, if you've read 'the adventures of tom sawyer' this book is a kind of sequel written from Huckleberry Finn's point of view. He is a young boy and it is a story of his journey and adventures down the Mississipi river as he is running away from 'sivilisation' in the 19th century.

It is an interesting story and I enjoyed reading it. I love how Mark Twain satirised the hypocrisy of the times.

I see your point, about a 3 or 4 year old . But the word itself is not bad , it is how the word is used that make it good or bad .

agreed, i would never second guess twains use, but i understand how it could be hard to get past it. i remember reading it as a bedtime story to my now 21 yr old when he was 3-4 yrs old, i simply deleted the n word, as i thought the purpose would be lost and all he would get was the word "nigger" coming out of his white southern father's mouth a few hundred times. i do agree that for middle schoolers and grown ups, any substitute or deletion would dilute the power of the book.

But if you remove the word Nigger from the book , do you not also remove one of the most powerful antiracist statement in the book .

you can only block veiwers of your shelf from asking questions, it does not stop total strangers who have never seen your shelf from asking questions that a few reviews and comments at the book would give them plenty to go on.
