An American Classic set in the Okeefenokee swamp of Florida where a boy in a poor rural family cares for an orphan fawn to ease the harsh burden of his life. The story develops the interplay between family and animal as it grows and the hard choices life puts upon us.

Beautifully written. Not just a sad story about a boy and his doomed fawn. I read it as a child and am so glad that I decided to read the story again.

I recently watched the movie, "Cross Creek" about the life of the author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It is worth viewing. It gives a lot of insight into the writing of this book.

Reread this as an adult it while visiting the "nature coast" of Florida. Still evocative & powerful.

A great book that both adults and children can enjoy at their own levels.
