They only give birth to illusions, all of which, in the eye of Flaubert, shall be dulled by life. "Before the wedding, she had believed herself in love. But not having obtained the happiness...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I am hard pressed to think of a fictional character I've hated more.”

However, I did not like the main character nor did I really like how the book ended but all-in-all I would still recommend it.”

Great story about woman who tries to get out of the prison she founds her life to be mostly making all the wrong choices - and it's just so special because it's placed in the 1800s and than all here mistakes were tripled considering society's low tolerance for resenting accepted moral, matrimonial and altogether general principles. Liked it very much and enjoyed every sentence!”

Emma Bovary marries a provincial country doctor thinking she will be happy with married life. She isn't, and bored with her life, abandons her loving husband and takes a lover. She descends quickly down spiral of debt, adultry, and eventually death. It is easy to understand why this book was a scandal when it was written. I must admit this is one of the few classics that I have never liked. It is a must read, but not an easy or pleasant one. ”

This is a carefully crafted novel and a sad story about Madame Bovary's mental and physical decline and her husband's inability to reach and rescue her. Mmmm... beautiful!”

At first the novel was very, very tedious and difficult to read. However, the plot did pick up a little toward the end, and Flaubert cast his characters and the bourgeois in a mercilessly frank manner. ”

Flaubert used an innovative narrative technique, but there are few interesting events in this novel, and this woman is despicable, selfish and useless. ”
