William Faulkner gets my vote for Greatest American Novelist, and “The Sound and the Fury” is his masterpiece. If ever you were in doubt about the meaning of the term “Southern Gothic,” look no further. This portrayal of the last gasps of the Compson family, descended from “governors and...

Spanning about 1900 to 1928, The Sound and the Fury tells the story of the Compsons, a family with deep Southern roots, but which is falling on hard times and whose pride is now suffering from self-inflicted wounds. The family patriarch is an alcoholic. One of the Compton brothers, Benjy,...

Still getting through it. I'm in the mood for escapism and this is hardly light reading. It's dense and angry and feels claustrophobic and hopeless, but I'm sure it is a very good book and I'll read it when I'm happier.

Some say that this is one of the greatest books in American Literature, and I honestly wish I got that kind of reaction from this book. However, this was a painful read for me. The prose is very challenging to read. Normally, this would not throw me off completely, but the story itself bored me. Characters such a Quentin and Benjy are well portrayed for what they are, but they could not save their dense sections. The prose is very original and sometimes beautiful, but if I can't understand half the plot I can't enjoy the book.

The key to reading this book is *Don't worry about the first section!* I'll say it again:
DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE FIRST SECTION. It is by far the most convoluted and impossible thing Faulkner ever wrote. The other sections make sense, and are straightforward, though challenging, reading. But Benjy's section is really not all that important, and you probably won't get so much out of it. Actually, the sections get easier as you go along. The last section is simplicity itself to understand. The first section wasn't meant to be understood with just one reading.

The book, by the way, is an amazing masterpiece, but you've heard Oprah say that already.

Absolutely painful process to read. Forced myself through it. Glad I read it. Never ever would do it again. Four stars for sheer genius and originality. One star for enjoyable read.
