I really enjoy historical fiction, so I was really excited to read this book. I'd say the first 3/4 of it was fantastic: the plot was interesting, the main character was very complex, and the writing itself was excellent. After that, the problem became that the book dragged on a bit. Don't get me wrong, it was still just as captivating as before, but it was just too much. I feel as if it could've been shortened by a few chapters and still have had the same effect. Regardless, the book merits a high rating and is very helpful as a learning tool to learn about the time period. I highly sympathized with the main character, Mina, who pretended to be a boy so that she could get work and eventually join her brother in America after her parents had died. In addition to being a historical fiction novel, this book also definitely has a coming-of-age aspect to it. I would recommend this book to anyone (especially a couple of years younger) that liked the 'Dear America' series way back when in elementary or middle school or someone that just likes those adolescent protagonist books.

This was a lovely story ... a bit predictable in parts ... but I was carried away nonetheless. Am just starting the sequel "Bread and Dreams". I'll let you know!

Nice historical novel about a Catholic girl who is befriended by a Jewish man. No WOW factor but enjoyable.

I absolutely loved this book! I could not put it down and actually ended up buying it, just so I could own it (having borrowed it from the library). I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
