What a disappointment! I expected to be drawn out transported by the beauty of the various areas in the US That the author traveled too. Instead it was boring and drawn out.

Phil Connors has created this eclectic work which in many ways defies labeling. It is a good read; one part biography, on part an exposition on the wilderness, and one part a meditation of the inner self. Readers of Kerouac, Thoreau, and Melville would appreciate this work.

Another excellent Frank Coffin mystery, the third in the series by Jon Loomis about the incredibly pragmatic and dryly funny police detective (now acting chief) in the exceedingly colorful town of Provincetown. Beautiful depiction of the eccentric town and its eccentric inhabitants, great characterization all around. And so dryly funny. Such an enjoyable and unique series.

Was hoping it was as good as A Walk In The Woods (AWITW) and well, it wasn't (not by a long shot). I didn't think it was bad, but it left me wanting. I enjoy solitude and the wilderness but unlike when after reading AWITW I wanted to go hike the AT, I have no interest in being a fire spotter after reading this book. In the acknowledgements section, the author made reference to how the book evolved from his journal, and after finishing it and thinking about it, it makes sense that maybe the material/author pressed to hard to make it something more than it was capable of.

Philip Connors tells of his seasons as a fire lookout in the Southwest. Interesting look at what a fire lookout does and the time he has to think and enjoy the beauty of this planet.

A breezy read. Like most books by environmentalist types there are tones of holier-than-thou attitude accompanied by the "been there done that" prose but i didn't let those things get in the way of what I intended to get out of this book: Entertainment.
