Rachel is a young woman with no place to go. Her parents have passed, and her sister wants nothing to do with her. She has always dreamed of living in France, and after her fathers death travels there. But once there, she has no money and no place to stay. She becomes a prostitute, "lady of the night". But she isn't like the other girls in the house. She focuses on earning money to buy her way out and find a place of her own. One day on the street she comes across a strange foreigner painting. It turns out to be Vincent Van Gogh. He wants to paint her, and she wants to get home before she gets in trouble. He pursues her often at her work and eventually becomes a paying customer. But he is unlike all of her other customers. They kiss and she charges him much less. The two fall in love. She desperately wants to marry him and live with him. But Vincent's brother Theo won't allow it. Or so Vincent says. As Vincent and Rachel's love grows, Vincent's health weakens. Rachel finds herself pregnant one night, but after it is too late and has miscarried. Vincent shows up extremely drunk and hands her his ear. He is in and out of mental hospitals, and only Rachel believes he will get better.
