I started reading this series since it was making waves on the various bestseller lists. On it's own it didn't seem all that amazing - then again it's hard to say. You have to hand it to Rowling for immediately announcing this was a 7-book series, setting an interesting expectation for readers while at the same time kicking off a new age in young adult book series. It's a powerful story at its core, I'll give her that.

I had to find out what the fuss was about concerning the Harry Potter stories. I saw the first movie and enjoyed it. I took out the audio CD from the library and listened. I was hooked. The book was even better than the movie. No surprise there. I love the story of a down and out reject from a so called normal family. He is given the chance to reach out to others most like him and in turn learn about his deceased parents. A good versus evil battle that takes you to the next book. A real hook in book one.

A terrific story! It introduces characters that I began to care about immediately. It's hard to remember now that these characters that people 6 other books to follow this one in a series is about 11-year olds on their way to boarding school in the English countryside.
That sounds like a children's book. No and No and No.
It's a story for all ages.
Read this book. It's what I call a "Red Light Page Turner." If I was reading a book that I was absolutely IN, as though I'd fallen into the book and was right there with the characters, I'd take it everywhere with me.
Then, if I pulled up at a red light, I used to read as many pages as I could before the light changed again. Heh. I stopped doing it after I had children, but that's still my benchmark. If it's so good that I won't go anywhere without it , it's a RLPT. A red light page turner.
This book should be on everyone's shelf. It's wonderful.
