Worthless. Although Rowling is able to construct an interesting premise, and even some clever character prototypes, the book is completely devoid of value.

The plot is predictable, the characters are all painfully one-dimensional, and Dr. Seuss had a better mastery of verbal imagery. "The gnome had a big nose" does not generate a picture in the mind's eye.

Although I'm told the rest of the books of the series mature along with the characters, I was never able to bring myself to read them after this boring, simple tolders' book. It's not even a children's book! Children should be reading things ABOVE their reading level, or they won't grow intellectually. Jules Verne should be the staple in 2nd grade, not this pandering baby-talk.

You actually preferred RA Salvatore's Road of the Patriarch to Harry Potter? I must admit that I'm a bit surprised. He's an awful writer all things considered, and I would certainly give young readers one of JK Rowling's books before I would even consider Salvatore's.

the plot is predictable?????read the other books........Rowling has sewn each tiny matter together making them important.........the story is fantastic......it touches your heart.......It is one the wonderful books ever written about love ,power and the innocent........it develops the imaginary skills of children........i'd recommend Harry Potter series first to anyone who hasn't read them........i have seen many who said what you said and then changed their mind after reading the whole series.......

haha that was funny. But seriously, I have no idea where you're coming from with this review. Are you sure you didn't click on the wrong book? Rowling is a master of story telling, and there is nothing predictable about this, unless you watched the movie before reading the book or something...

Hmm....I think the fact that HP got millions of children to start reading and stay reading says a lot about the books. Children started reading these books young and stuck with the series for the decade it was going strong. Fact is, the HP books are a great set of books for children to read. Rowling is a master at story-telling and is a superb writer.

i can't believe that you would (to be frank) diss harry potter, and more importantly j.k. rowling! these are beautifully written books that, in the words of entertainment weekly, SAVED reading. j.k. rowling is an exquisite writer, and became what she is today because of PURE TALENT! 'pandering baby-talk?!?' 'worthless?!?!?' 'simple toddler's book?!?!?!?' it's people like you make these magical books sound like fluffly-junk, like there just another series to occupy the minds of brainless teenagers. for your information, these books sparked a lifetime memories for children and adults alike. when people of generations today look back on what was popular in their days, these books will always come to the minds of the caring, intelligent, and most importantly those open to fantastical ideas and the those who are willing to accept something wonderful into their hearts. bottom line: DO NOT EVER REFER TO HARRY POTTER AS WORTHLESS!!!

Sure, let's make Jules Verne standard second-grade fare. Then let's watch every kid in this country give up on reading entirely because his stories went so far over their head. Just because you shouldn't patronize kids (which the Harry Potter books don't. And seriously, if you didn't like them, that's fine, but don't insult everyone who does; that's way below the belt) doesn't mean you should force reading material at least six years above their level on them.

You can't judge a series by the first book, for example, I found Twilight much worse than Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, but after pushing myself through Twilight, I absolutely loved the rest of them. After reading one of of seven books and judging them as horrible, that just makes you a judgmental idiot, to make this reply shorter. Read the rest, I can assure you they are better than the first, though personally, I found the Sorcerer's Stone a great book. And J.K. Rowling is a master author, one of the most popular in the world, and to insult all HP fans, that just makes you outnumbered. ;]
