Writing Readers 748 books / 3974 members / 5741 posts If you're an aspiring or successful writer, this is the group for you. Suggest your favorite books on the craft, discuss past and present challenges, and share some nurture with a growing community of other online-savvy, "writing readers". Welcome!

Note: If you want to promote a book or writing website on which you publish, please use the "Shameless Self-Promotion" discussion thread. In order to keep this from becoming a chaotic open bazaar of single-shot marketing, we are deleting book notices, reviews, etc. from other threads and directing all authors to the "Shameless Self-Promotion" thread. Thank you for understanding.

Mythology, Folklore, & Fairy Tales 252 books / 369 members / 151 posts Erudite discussion of mythology, folklore, and fairytales as a literary genre. (Please note that this does not include Science Fiction/Fantasy genre).

Plato "suggested that the future citizens of his ideal republic begin their literary education with the telling of myths, rather than with mere facts or so-called rational teachings. Even Aristotle, master of pure-reason, said: 'The friend of wisdom is also a friend of myth'." -- Bruno Bettelheim, _The Uses of Enchantment_ , p. 35

Audible Books to recommend 542 books / 273 members / 1201 posts I thought it would be nice to have a list of books that people have read that are on audible (downloads from Audible.com & library CDs are my choices). I've created quite a wish list, making sure that it is listing books that can be listened to -- otherwise, no point in thinking about it. We are so lucky to have such an incredible selection of books to listen to now -- it's a whole new world and just in 5 years! I used to read 3 books a year if I was lucky -- now it's more like 30 books now that I can listen -- I love it!!

When members write down the books they have read -- give at lease a two word critique, even if as simple as the star system -- it's more helpful to see that than the list of books one plans to read. Also, mentioning the book name in Comments allows the reader to see what you are referring to when reading from iPhone!
YA Books that Adults Should Read 942 books / 2715 members / 5787 posts Some of the best literature is written for young adults and children. This group is for sharing titles that are often overlooked because they are marketed to younger people.
Adults who love Harry Potter 22 books / 440 members / 151 posts
Harry Potter 56 books / 2915 members / 4484 posts This Harry Potter group is all about The Boy Who Lived, Dumbledore (rip),
Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Sirius, Snape, James, Lilly, Luna, Neville, Fred, George,
Hagrid, McGonagall, and all other wonderful wizards JK Rowling has created.
But also about YOU and what YOU thought about the books, the series,
JKR, your feelings and your thoughts! Come and share it with all of us!
Thank you all for joining and particpating in our discussions, we know we couldn't have done it without our members!
FYI: every once in a while, you'll notice discussions disappear... That's because either the thread has already been opened, or because nobody has answered it, or because there is no real discussion there, and you just feel like 'opening a subject' for the fun of it. You can always mail admins with questions on anything related to the group, the discussions, the members, or to report something out of the ordinary! Can I also ask you to NOT add books that have no relation to Harry Potter, his world or JKR? Thank you!
ENJOY !

Book Chat 1084 books / 1416 members / 8177 posts Welcome to Book Chat!

Instead of being about a particular book, author or genre this group is about books and reading in general. Discussions have covered a wide variety of topics, from bookmarks, to book type preference (paperback, hardcover or trade paperback) to book-to-movie tie-ins, to where and when you read and even what started you reading.

We also have some fun new projects starting and we hope you will join us.

Tenia has started a Secret Reader (aka Secret Santa) where we will exchange gently used books.

Tenia has also started a monthly book read. Our first group read will start in January and we are currently taking votes on several books that were nominated for the fiction genre.

We are also currently taking nominations for books for February and March. Our February read will be horror and our March read will be chick lit.

A discussion book raffle of sorts will be starting very soon so be sure to check back for details.

Feel free to pop-in and have a look around. We would love to have you join us for some discussion and fun.

Your admins...Kelly and Tenia
Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 668 books / 174 members / 10378 posts October Spooky Duel Book Group Read: Dracula...Bram Stoker and Interview With the Vampire...Anne Rice

There are people who will read any book that comes out, and there are people who won't read anything that is less than 200 years old. The Brilliant Babes (and Dudes) are in-between--we often turn up our noses at certain writers, but we have a keen appreciation for high-quality brain candy as well! We are a friendly group mixed with a bit of sharp sarcasm, a sprinkling of green Enabler Dust and a TBR pile a mile high.

If you are slightly toward the snobbish side of the book-lover's spectrum--if you love your Dickens but also love your Nora--then you've come to the right place! Our group is invite-only to preserve the correct mix of people, but if you want to join, drop Suze, Rob or Dragonfly a note and we will review your shelf. If you get a friend invite, accept it and we will invite you to join us! (Please note that none of the admins spends all day, every day online. It may be a few days before we can get back to you. Suze and Dragonfly especially go MIA for various reasons, so please be patient and it will be rewarded!) Also, please do NOT ask for an invitation if you don't plan on regularly posting. It does take us time to review new members, and we love new members who participate, but the posts are visible to all Shelfari members who just want to lurk. :)

BBD Blog: http://brilliantbabes.blogspot.com -- chock full of BBD goodness!

Note for all members: In the past, we have had people confuse "slightly snobby" with "raging literary a-holes." Although we do appreciate a good crack on a bad author, please refrain from knowingly insulting your fellow BBDs. We love Shakespeare, but we hate drama!

50 Book Challenge! 4693 books / 4691 members / 31156 posts Welcome to the 50-Book Challenge! We are not listless. In fact, we love lists ...

A list of the books we've been looking forward to, for example, can be found by following this link:

http://astore.amazon.com/allencotrip-20

Our challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

To join, all you need to do is start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books (with title and author, please.) Reviews are always welcome as well. It is a very good idea to bookmark your post (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites)for quick access for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

I enjoy reading your lists, and my TBR pile has grown as a result and I've read books I wouldn't have otherwise (The Hunger Games, I'm talking to you ...)

It doesn't have to be all lists all the time, though ... People enjoy it when you comment on their lists as well, so when you update your list ... take a minute and browse around. You never know what you might find. (Water For Elephants, I'm talking to you.)

The books we loved in 2008 can be found by following the Amazon link below

I survey the group each year starting in mid-December, until about mid-January then compile the lists and post the results. I look forward to this year's lists, now that the Twilight fervor has died down.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.
NNBR - Not Necessarily Book Related 103 books / 562 members / 14474 posts Oh, come on! we need a place to just chat here, whether or not it's about books.

Religion, politics, recipes, games, restaurant reviews, dinner ideas, WWYD questions, tech recommendations, and whatever else you can think of or want to discuss.

Bitching and moaning are allowed. Bullying, trolling and scams are not.. This forum is not an appropriate place for authors to promote their books (but we'd LOVE to chat with you!) The management thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

A Note about Deleting Posts:
I don't generally delete threads, mostly because I'm pretty much against censorship (unless it becomes a mean, knock down drag out, name calling fight) but also because I believe that it is important to know where the idiots are, so to speak. If I deleted every obnoxious post, new folks would join the group and have no idea that that Person X had a habit of spouting all this nonsense. I think that if you're going to act like an idiot, your stuff should be left up so that everyone can see you for what you are. Forewarned is forearmed, IMO.

Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics 1696 books / 2047 members / 2550 posts I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a great way to discuss likes and dislikes about these books.

Just a warning, I will also put realistic-fiction books on the group shelf if I feel that they are as good as a fantasy or sci-fi book. MEOW!!!!!

***NOTICE***
If you are a member, or just a random person, please put any sci-fi or fantasy book that you *LOVE* on the group shelf, please!

Another thing, plez post discussions or reply to one, i'd love to hear your opinions.

BabeCake Reading 748 books / 185 members / 1849 posts BabeCake Reading is a general reading group that was originally intended as an adjunct to the Yahoo general reading group Babecakes. We’re here to discuss any book or reading material. All Book-a-holics are welcome. If you are not a member of the Yahoo Babecakes group, please feel free to apply for membership at groups.yahoo.com/group/Babecakes and PLEASE mention your age. Unlike this Shelfari group, the Yahoo group does have a minimum age requirement (although very little to no “adult” type of discussion actually happens).

You do not have to be a member of the Yahoo group to be a member of the Shelfari group and vice versa. To date, the Yahoo group seems to be the more verbose of the two groups but the Shelfari group has the advantage of the wonderful shelves.

Feel free to add to the shelves especially if you are discussing a particular book. It makes it SO much easier for interested members to get more information on the book that you mention.

Also feel free to open up a discussion whenever you wish to. If it is Off Topic (not about reading or writing) please put “OT” in your discussion topic title. Administrators, though, do reserve the right to erase topics that are a bit too much off of the topic or are offensive to most other members in our group.

BTW: Opening up a discussion on both the Babecakes and the BabeCake Reading groups will not be considered cross-posting and are welcome. In fact, for those of you who are on both groups, please feel free to cut and paste discussions (but not the responses please) from one group to the other. We administrators don’t always remember to do this and need the help.

Fairyland Fantasy Book Group 98 books / 63 members / 25 posts Did you read “The Lord of the Rings” BEFORE the movie came out?
Did you wait at the book store until midnight for the release of Harry Potter?
Are you counting down the days until Enders Game makes it to the big screen?
Have you ever imagined a whole different world?
Do you secretly believe in magic?

If you answered yes to any of these questions than you should join this group. We will focus on the fiction genres that are fantasy, science fiction and alternate reality books. What are your all time classic favorites and what new authors or books have you discovered? What authors have truly captured your imagination? Who will be the next Tolkien or J K Rowling? What makes a fantasy book believable? Join us as we look at these questions and continue to read great books.

***Discussion Rule. All notes and posts should stay clean and free from all dirty language or inappropriate subject matter. This group is made up of individuals with intelligence and imagination that don’t need degrading content to express themselves.

Fowl Pottery 26 books / 48 members / 414 posts For anyone who loves these masters of Modern Fantasy: JKR and Colfer. But really, we're here to discuss anything to do with the books that have not just entertained us but also intrigued us and somehow changed the way we think, feel or write. Join in if you feel like it!

[Group Image by Revival @ TDA].

House Rules-

1. No books other than those written by Eoin Colfer and JKR are allowed in to be placed on the Group Shelf or discussed. Closely related books in this same genre (Modern Fantasy/Fantasy) may be discussed but not added to the group shelf unless otherwise agreed upon by all the Admin.

2. Let's keep swearing to a minimal.

3. Any sort of racist, sexist, homophobic remarks as well as any other comments that are demeaning to others are prohibited. This can earn you a removal from the group.

4. This is a PG-13 rated group. I intend to keep it that way. Any links that you would like to post will first have to be screened by the Admin. You may send us a mail or a note and wait for approval. However, you can start the discussion in the mean-time.

5. This is a group not a market- please do not market any sort of products here, no matter how profitable it may be for the consumers as well.

6. Each member will receive 3 warnings through personal notes before removal from the group.

7. Equally, active participation and innovative discussion boards may earn you a promotion. Currently, all three of the Admin are completing their final year at high school and are unable to post regularly.

8. Members may introduce themselves and make friends only at the Introduce Yourself thread. However, for safety reasons, there shall be no exchange of contact details except maybe, your e-mail address, though I wouldn't recommend it.

Strong Female Characters in Fantasy 197 books / 105 members / 147 posts Enjoy reading books about strong female characters in the fantasy genre? Whether the books are set in different worlds, historical fiction, or urban fantasy, these female characters usually have unusual powers, can handle a fight with a guy, and have a bit of romance brewing too. Usually, these fantasies have major plot twists to keep you guessing, and the love interests seem evil/mean at first glance. Not all of these have happy endings, but the woman prevails.
