Wonderful. One of those novels that is long enough to feel you know the characters and feel a genuine grief at their passing.

In the case of Jean Valjean, however, he is such a multi-faceted, universal figure that, knowing him, there's always more to discover, and losing him, there's...

I've read this 3-4 times in my life. I'd read it again in a heartbeat.

Often times more moral philosophizing than story this book is unforgettable in many ways. It will just stick to you. A great, but long and extended read.

Some will choose an abridged edition as Hugo at times lingers on meticulously supporting his historical fiction. 'Les Mis' is another of those great consciousness/conscience-ness raising works that dissects socio-spiritual problems through a most memorable depiction of grace in heart-touching, inter-woven narratives.

An engrossing and very engaging book. The great amount of detail was a double-edged sword. As a historian I appreciate the details of a period of history that I am weak on. However, all the details and filling in the gaps in the background make for a somewhat disjointed story. The book clearly shows that it is written over an extended period of time.

I have removed one star from my overall review because this edition is abridged. Further the abridgment is not noted anywhere in the book and the translator is not indicated either.

Les Misérables proved to be one of those rare classics that lives up to its reputation. An enthralling read with many interesting characters and yet a richness and depth to the tale that makes you return to your own life with new insight into the human condition.

I just finished! (Excuse me while I dry my eyes.) This is a wonderful book that gets better the further one reads. I am sure I will return to it many times. Hugo puts so much into it besides a great story rich in characters. So much to think about--philosophy, history, theology, sociology, and much, much more. Like War and Peace, it's a baggy-pants book, and I'm in love with both books, bags and all. That's all I'll say about Les Miserables right now: you have to just experience it for yourself.
