Say what you will about Scarlett O'Hara, but there's a reason she caught the imagination of our nation when this novel was published in 1936, during the height of the Great Depression. Scarlett's resilience and determination to make it through the Civil War and Reconstruction struck a cord with struggling Americans. I understood this book better after watching the movie "CSA". It's a re-writing of history for the purpose of creating sympathy for the south's lost cause.

this is the first grown up book i've read, back when i was 14. from the first page, i was hooked. it tells of the struggles of a woman, a family, a country caught in a civil war. it tells how the main character has evolved from an innocent carefree and spoilt young lady to a string character trying to recapture an old life of innocence and priveledge, only to find the circumstances changed by the war, her own decisions resulting from a mixture of selfishness and selflessness. it is a love story gone awry due to politics, malice and greed, where the central characters keep on finding ways to find salvation and security to their own detriment. a good read. the movie is excellent, yet the book is better.
