Explore the American Civil War through the generals' eyes (or those who become generals).

Well written. It presents the conflict of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of some of the key players on both sides. Chamberlain (Union) became one of my greatest heroes after reading these books. I admit that while reading the third in the trilogy, "Last Full Measure" I got a little tired of the war but then realized that so were those who were involved in it and any reader of the Shaara books shouldn't stop before the last quarter or so of that last book. It contains some of the best and most life-impacting accounts of the war.

I read all three seperately. When coupled with "Killer Angels" they give a wonderful overview of the Civil War and the people we read about so drylly in history books.

I haven't read The Last Full Measure yet, but I loved the experience of the first two.

This is a civil war trilogy. I think all three books are terrific. Having grown up just outside of Antietam Battlefield I can really put myself in that period. I believe the books are very well written and except where the author takes poetic license, historically there is good accuracy.

This series awakened in me a keen interest in the Civil War; I like the first and second books the best, but then I had to finish it. I thought these were very well written and well researched, but they are long and maybe a little over-detailed sometimes. The amazing thing about all three is that each chapter is written from a different leader's perspective: sometimes a Northern general, sometimes a Southern. That technique (sometimes a little confusing, but there are character descriptions at the beginning of each book) caused me to empathize with both sides and to see that there were no enemies, just two sides trying to survive and defend their positions. I recommend these to history lovers.
