It’s a profound play about the daemonic power of groupthink, of the mob, of a society ruled by fear, and sadly, this play is more relevant today than...” see full review » see other reviews » |

The beginning is a little hard to understand at some points and quite dry. But towards the end, as you see John Proctor go insane, the book gets very interesting and really captures the essence of the Salem witch trials era. Short, easy read for a rainy day.”

This era was at a time where the paranoia of witches was in full force, thousands of women and some men were murdered and executed at the suspicion of being a witch. The witch hunt itself brings up a lot of controversial topics such as whether or not witches truly exist and also brought up a lot of topics of God and demons/ the Devil. In the Crucible the book is based on all this madness of this era. The book deals with the phycology of young teenage girls and how fast society can spiral out of control. There is also a lot of family hatred passed down over the years as well as affairs. Forgiveness and your soul pride is a big factor in the book and would strongly recommend it to anyone. ”

“The setting of The Crucible is in Salem, Massachusetts, in the spring of the year 1692. This town is know for christanity and they are affraid of whitch craft. Therefore they have many rule. during this time people are getting accused of witch craft, so the have people that are accusors Their are many main characters but the one the one that catches my eye is Abigail. she is the neice of Reverend Samuel Parris, and she had an affair with John Proctor. there are 5 girls that are are accusors of witchcraft and Abigail charges Elizebeth Proctor (john proctors wife) for witchcraft on her. Elizebeth got put in jail therefore john went to the courts and fought about whitch craft. this story is also about land. jonh proctor and parris dont like each other because of land.”

The setting gives an accusatory tone because everyone is accusing each other of being a witch to get what they want. The setting creates John Proctor's adultery is due to the lack of attention from his wife Elizabeth. The sense of loneliness pushes him towards Abigail. His braveness is due to his sense of justice and his loyalty towards his friends. When Elizabeth decides to reject the fact that John Proctor committed lechery on Abigail changes the plot because it gives Abigail more credibility as an accuser and makes the judges and witnesses of the court and switch over to her side. The Crucible first opens up with Parris and how he is worried that Betty is ill and hides that it could be witchcraft to save his reputation. As the plot continues we find out that Abigail has been in an affair with John Proctor and drinks blood to try to kill his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. After this Abigail tries to frame Elizabeth that she stabbed Abigail with a needle that was in the poppet which was given to her by Mary Warren. At the trial John Proctor is there and he admits that he had an affair with Abigail but Elizabeth denies that fact so he ends up in jail. They send his wife to tell John Proctor to admit it so they can stop a riot but he doesn't sign the paper because he wants to save his land and he ends up being hanged. I highly recommend this book to people who are interested in the Salem witch trials because there's a lot of knowledge on how the trials happened.”
