This is my first Dostoevsky read, and because of that this is the only Dostoevsky I know. People hardly mention this as a favorite of his and I can see why, because it's quite the dragger at times. But to anyone who feels bored with what seems like a Henry James-esque drama at (many) points, the...

It is perhaps worth a second read, but it didn't have the same effect on me as Crime and Punishment.

Only Dostoevsky can write a tragedy on love harboured not by the heart but by the mind. Unlike his other works, I didn't enjoy 'The Idiot'. I picked up the book because I read that he had shared in it the thoughts that went through his mind when they did a mock execution on him. Those depictions & the philosophy therein didn't fail me. I was hoping to read more such revelations and there weren't many. Only other gripping portion was 'The Confession' by Ippolit when he shared the thoughts running through the mind of a dying man. His expectations; people's sympathies and the honesty of thoughts. The rest of the story was almost a drawl where I found myself forcing to read a chapter a day.

Ya lioblio Dostoevsky... Since living in St Petersburg around the area that Dostoevsky lived and wrote, I have had a bit of a love for his work. While the Idiot is one of his harder books to read, and I certainly didn't enjoy it as much as either the Brother's Karamazov and Crime and Punishment, I would still recommend this to a friend.

Loved the example of a simple man and how people react to his goodness.
