Zoey Redbird, a 16-year-old girl has been marked. After, being shunned by her "friends" and family (except her ex-boyfriend Heath), Zoey goes to her grandmother's house and, finding a note that says her grandmother was at her lavender fields, goes through the woods that lead to said field but collapsed due to severe weakness and health deterioration (a consequence to fledglings if they stay away from adult vampyres for too long). She lost consciousness when she hit her head on a rock when she collapsed. While out of consciousness, her spirit seemed to have travel deeper into the woods where she met the Goddess Nyx, and wakes up with her crescent moon mark completely filled in (a feature only seen in adult vampyres). Her grandmother then finds her and takes her to the House of Night, a vampyre finishing school. Zoey quickly finds a group of friends - Damien, an extremely nice and intelligent gay boy, Stevie Rae, a girl with an Oklahoma accent who becomes Zoey's best friend, and Erin and Shaunee, best friends who are freakishly alike even though they look different (nicknamed "The Twins"). Zoey also meets the High Priestess in Training, Aphrodite, who is pretty, mean, and the queen of the social scene. Aphrodite invites Zoey to join the Dark Daughters, a 'members-only' group run by Aphrodite. Zoey is forced to go where she experienced blood-lust. After finding out she drank blood, she runs into Heath who she accidentally imprints on. Also, Zoey realizes that she can control the five elements: water, fire, air, earth and spirit after she sees the spirits of students who rejected the Change and at a Goddess ritual. Zoey meets a boy named Erik Night, who is Aphrodite's ex-boyfriend, and they become very close. Later on, Erik asks out Zoey and they kiss. At another Dark Daughters meeting, Zoey realizes that Aphrodite had been using her powers in a bad way and stops her. Neferet, the principal of the House of Night, sees this and strips Aphrodite of her title of Leader of the Dark Daughters and High Priestess in Training and gives it to Zoey.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Zoey Redbird Daughter of Night , I name you my eyes and ears in the world today, a world where good and evil are struggling to find balance”
    Nyx
  • “Darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always bring good.”
    Nyx
  • “But I'm sixteen! I can't even parallel-park! How am I supposed to know how to be your eyes and ears?”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “Well, I guess being the next Nicole Kidman wouldn't be bad (not that I plan on marrying and then divorcing a manic short guy)”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “And this is our token guy in our group, Damien Maslin. But he's gay, so I don't really think he counts as a guy.”
    Stevie Rae
  • “Actually, since I'm gay I think I should count for two guys instead of just one. I mean, in me you get the male point of view and you don't have to worry about me wanting to touch your boobies.”
    Damien Maslin
  • “Kayla, if you don't shut up I'll fly down there and suck every last bit of blood from your stupid cheating cow body!”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “Zoey Montgomery! Night has chosen thee; thy death will be thy birth. Night calls to thee; hearken to Her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the House of Night.”
    Tracker
  • “Oh no..." I whispered to myself, "it would be just my luck to get a raging case of diarrhea.”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “If everyone called things what they are we'd all be a lot less confused. For instance, you know when I have to go to the bathroom I state the obvious - I have urine that needs to come out of my urethra. Simple. Easy. Clear.”
    Damien Maslin
  • “It didn't work because it seemed like a crude imitation of Neferet's dance to "She Walks in Beauty." If this music was a poem it would be more like "Some Ho Grinds Her Bootie.”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “It's Star Wars, the original ones. I know all the lines for all the parts." He leaned closer and whispered again. "I can even do Chewbacca's parts.”
    Erik Night
  • “Don't you think baby corns are scary? There's just something wrong about their midget bodies.”
    Erik Night
  • “The entire world knew that there was nothing anyone could do to bring on the Change. The whole "if you get bit by a vampyre you'll die and become one" thing is strictly fiction. Scientists have been trying to figure out what causes the sequence of physical events that leads to vampyrism for years, hoping that if they figure it out they could cure it, or at least invent a vaccine to fight against it. So far, no such luck. But now John Heffer, my step loser, had suddenly discovered that bad teenage behavior-specifically my bad behavior, which mostly consisted of an occasional lie, some pissed off thoughts and smart-ass comments directed primarily against my parents, and maybe some semi-harmless lust for Ashton Kutcher(sad to say he likes older women)- actually brought about this physical reaction in my body. Welll, hell! Who knew?”
    Zoey Montgomery
  • “Well, he was wearing those really bad pants with that awful shirt. Clearly he did need some things explained to him by a teenager, but I didn't think it was the right time to mention his unfortunate and obvious fashion impairment”
    Zoey to her step loser
  • “Oh, God, I'm sorry I-" I broke off, wondering if it was okay to say "God". Would it offend Neferet, a High Priestess who wore her Goddess Mark so proudly? Hell, would it offend Nyx? Oh, God. What about saying "Hell"? It was my favorite cuss word ever. (Okay, it was really the only cuss word I used reguarly.)”
    Zoey
  • “Okay, I knew exactly what she was talking about, but it wasn't because I'm a hopeless history nerd. It's because when I was younger I thought I was in love with Leonardo DiCaprio, and my mom got me the entire DVD collection of his movies for my twelfth birthday. This particular movie I watched so many times I still have most of it memorized (and I cannot tell you how many times I snot cried when he slipped off that board and floated away like an adorable Popsicle).”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “As he said the last 2 lines his eyes locked with mine and, just like in the hall the day before, it seemed as if there was no one else in the room- no one else in the world.”
    Zoey Redbird:
  • “Zo, whatever's happened with your body is cool with me. You look seriously hot. You've always been beautiful, but now you look like a real goddess. (page 178)”
    Heath
  • “But I noticed Aphrodite wasn't looking at the dress. She was looking at my Mark, which bugged the crap out of me. Ok, my Mark is colored in- get over it already! I didn't say anything, though. I mean, this was totally her "party" and I was the guest. Translation: I was totally outnumbered, so I better be good. (page 157)”
    Zoey Redbird
  • “Magic! They were actually praying for magic! Would it work-could it work? Was there really magic in this world? (page 147)”
