“After reading Hajj's first novel and being pretty unimpressed by it, I wasn't too sure about this one. But it pleasantly surprised me. Unlike the other, this novel's plot is deep and engaging: stories within stories, complex characters one actually cares about, trans-cultural connections and concerns, war, religion, language.... Haji gives all of this a brilliant treatment in this book. I would say it's most worth reading for what it can tell us about how and why people of different cultures, religions, etc understand each other. The only thing I can say is... Apparently Haji still doesn't know how to write a complete sentence--what's with the constant sentence fragments?! Not to mention the ?! pairs that crawl all over the text!”
