While this is the 19th Amelia Peabody book published, it actually takes place between between Guardian of the Horizon and the Falcon at the Portal (books 16 and 11). The Emerson's are being pulled into the British pre-war effort by spying on German spies. This time, instead of excavating in their beloved Egypt, the Emersons are off to the crumbling Ottoman Empire. As usual, Ramses manages to stick his nose in where it doesn't belong and ends up in trouble. While Ramses is missing in action, Emerson and Amelia are following a corrupt and inept excavator who claims he knows the exact location of the Ark of the Covenant. Typically, very little actual acheological work is completed as the various Emerson family members attempt to solve the mystery in their own ways. In the end, the Emersons emerge triumphant with the bad guys either running in disgrace or awaiting burial.
