Intelligent and independent heroine. Entertaining conversations and a small mystery for those who like them. The only downside is the formulaic storyline. ”
“This book was okay. A fiesty girl that everyone likes.”

In many ways this was a typical AQ story with an "older" herioine who is somewhat of a bluestocking, intelligent, and determined to marry for love or not at all. The hero also fits the profile of characters AQ has used before - wealthy, powerful, a good land manager who cares for his tenants, responsible, thinks he's in control, and believes he is marrying for practical reasons but falls hard for the heroine. But with Quick, these characters work.
I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Julian and Sophy. They marry early in the story which is another thing I enjoy about many AQ books. We get to see how they learn to deal with each other as a married couple rather than a few paragraphs in an epilogue. While there are some stumbles along the way, especially on Julian's part, there are no huge misunderstandings that go on forever and derail the story. There is the mystery that Sophy is determined to solve but that is well-integrated into the story and doesn't detract from the romance.
Much has changed in the romance genre since this book was published, and I must say that this book still holds up very well IMHO. So many of the current crop of historical romances are so generic and similar that it is hard to keep them apart. I often prefer the older titles like this one. ”
“I bought this book new. I followed the story and enjoyed the author.”

Yes | No“The jaded Earl of Ravenwood (Julian) offers marriage to a country gentry spinster (Sophy) expecting she can get no better offer and her aging grandparents need the funds he's offering. He'll give her a title and money if she gives him a son and no trouble or scandal. He's essentially buying a broodmare.
Sophy has loved him since she was 18 and thought he a dashing young lord. She agrees to the marriage as long as he agrees to give her time and respect. 1) Doesn't censor her reading, 2) doesn't control her father's inheritance (pocket money to him) and 3) gives her 3 months before consummating their marriage so she can know him better (and he might love her back). A week into the marriage and he's already breaking his word forcing her to sleep with him "as is his husbandly right". She retaliates by drugging him to sleep.
Good for her, I thought. If the man's going to be a pig and go back on his word to his bride, he well deserved any guilt he has over it. But time and time again Sophy lets the man off the hook. She allows him to bully her into sex, gets her pregnant, packs her off to the country, even tell her what she should and should not consider an issue of honor and family loyalty. He's a typical Alpha hero who never really gets his comeuppance.
”
“Miss AQ's famous 1-word-tilte. Love them all.”
