The Scarlet Pimpernel is sneaking into France to rescue the nobles being sent to the guillotine. The Revolutionists are not happy about it and have sent Chavier to find him. Caught up in the frippery of the English nobility, Margaret loves her husband - the Baronette - but misses her homeland of France. Attempting to use secrets he knows, he forces Margaret to spy on the English in an attempt to discover the identity of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

A colorful adventure and love story full of intrigue and suspense. A fabulous read!!

The first and most successful in the Baroness’s series of books that feature Percy Blakeney, who leads a double life as an English fop and a swashbuckling rescuer of aristocrats, The Scarlet Pimpernel was the blueprint for what became known as the masked-avenger genre. As Anne Perry writes in her Introduction, the novel “has almost reached its first centenary, and it is as vivid and appealing as ever because the plotting is perfect. It is a classic example of how to construct, pace, and conclude a plot. . . . To rise on the crest of laughter without capsizing, to survive being written, rewritten, and reinterpreted by each generation, is the mark of a plot that is timeless and universal, even though it happens to be set in England and France of 1792.”

Another book I wanted to read after seeing the movie. The book is nothing like the movie, but still has the same 'double agent' character that makes the movie so fun. One of the rare occasions when I think I enjoyed the movie more than the book though.

What a fabulous book! I can't believe it has taken me this long to read it. I never picked it up before because I expected 'Zorro' type plotlines, and that just isn't my thing. I was so surprised to find a love story, and a well written one at that. The writing was fabulous, and feels strangely contemporary. I highly recommend it.

It takes the first few chapters to really get into this book. Also, you will need to edit this book for offensive language. But it is a great historical fiction on the French Revolution.
