Liked It“I think I tried to watch the relatively recent BBC adaptation of this, but gave up not long into it because nothing was happening. You’d think the title would give that away. Didn’t Like It“The joke fell flat pretty quickly with this one. The first few chapters were fun but then the jokes started telegraphing themselves. Then it was one cliche after another. Blah.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Written in the 1850s but an interesting take on autobiographies of those who perhaps ought not to write them! Very witty.”

In that way the book receives a 3/5, okay, had some laugh-out-loud moments but they were few and far in-between.”
“I think I tried to watch the relatively recent BBC adaptation of this, but gave up not long into it because nothing was happening. You’d think the title would give that away. The book is much better, however, because with the nice intervals that a diary style gives, you have more natural stops, starts and potentials for fun.
What struck me more than anything was the farcical nature of the piece – the slapstick moments reminded me so much of Miranda, it couldn’t fail to warm my heart. Trying to make a dignified exit and then tripping over? Well, that’s Miranda all over.
Ultimately, there is a lot going on, even if it is balanced out with the mundane moments of DIY and gardening, and it’s nice that it all comes down to a happy ending. Mr Pooter seems like he could be a bit stuck up at times, a bit pompous, but you can’t help rooting for him and it’s good fun to journey with him through a year or so of his life.”
“Humourous diary of a clerk and his family. Very British!”

Objectively I see why it is held in such high regard, even though subjectively it didn't blow me away - though much of the amusement of human nature and pretension is universal, some parts felt dated and irrelevant. Not my usual 'kind' of novel, but glad I took the time to read it. ”

The jokes fall flat (besides one sharp one at the beginning) and the characters are neither hilarious or endearing. The exception would be Mr. Padge with his distinctive one-liner "That's right." Chapter twenty was slightly interesting in its philosophical diversion, but not enough to alter the verdict. I recommend Natsume's far superior "I Am a Cat". It does everything this book should've done, and more. One last saving grace is that the novel is quite speedily read. So if you're bored one afternoon, go ahead. If you have a say in the matter, chose some other book. ”
