three sisters head off to California, from Brooklyn, New York to meet the mother who abandoned them when they were very young. they plan on meeting a lady who takes them on adventures, but ends up going to a lady dressed in black all the time, with a secret kitchen nobody was allowed to go to, not a single home-cooked meal, and free breakfast and camp activities at a group called the black panthers. the mom might not be the wonder mom of their dreams, but the girls do get a little ounce of the fun they wanted to get, being around California. they figure out things about freedom, and love of what you have and more, this is a story about family.
