“I found this book to be a very frank & honest version of a frequently distorted history. As a biography, Carson is portrayed fairly I think - with warts and all so to speak. But this book is a little more than biography, too. There is plenty of cultural and historical context to draw from, so that the reader can fairly understand the enormity of taming the American West.
Hampton Sides' research into these subjects is truly inspiring - I am in awe of the exhaustive bibliography and notes he provides. Any doubts one might have on the veracity of this research should be put to rest. I found this book to be a relatively quick and easy read despite its numerous pages, but be warned there are a few chapters and passages that get bogged down in the minutiae of the story. Overall, a must-read for any student of history.”
