Nozick gets a bad name from many people, particularly students who feel they have to radically oppose him as they are students and thus have to see everything from a left wing veiwpoint. I heard this view of his theories and decided to get my own, preferably more balanced perspective. Although I agree with them on aspects of his philosophy i did find this book interesting. Nozick's philosophy although at times harsh and unforgiving is hard to argue with due to its simple logic. It is very hard to argue against his 'I produce it so its mine' logic due to its inherent desirability.

His revival of the Platonic idea of active citizenship is also interesting if a little flawed. Nozick wants the people to accept responsability for their own self-improvement and believes we should erect a state which exists solely to protect our rights. While I find his view on the state undesirable, I think that people should take more responsablity for their own self-improvement holds some validity. The state should still do something but I believe the onus is on the people to better themselves. People are far too lazy nowadays and freqeuntly sit around waiting for 'someone else to do it', I should know I lived with a few such individuals for two years.

All in all, an influential book which is worth a read whichever your persuasion but which like Rawls A Theory of Justice offers only one side of reality. Perhaps, god forbid we can take lessons from both sides of the equation

There are philosophical and logical flaws in this book, but it is thought provoking and well worth reading.
