Adriene lives in present day Seattle, WA. She used to live in Atlanta and was engaged to an important member of her old community, but something terrible happened (you'll have to read the book to find out) and now she's running for her life and hiding out in Seattle. In 16th century Scotland, Hawk Douglas is the laird of his keep and is reputed to be the most sensual of men. Even the Queen of the Fae, or the Tua de Dhanna, Aoibheal (pronounced ah-veel), is taken with him. Of course, this angers her male consort and her right-hand man (or Fae), Adam. Seeking petty vengence on Hawk, Adam and the male consort concoct a plan to ruin Hawk by making him fall in love with a woman who hates beautiful men. Adam bewitches one of Adriene's possessions and she tumbles through time to 16th century Scotland. After a lot of intermediate storyline, Adriene is married to Hawk through an arrangement neither can control. Upon first seeing her, Hawk falls in love. Adriene, on the other hand, feigns disinterest and only wants to go back home to present day. Adam, disguises himself as a blacksmith working on Hawk's land and tries to seduce Adriene. So, the rest of the story is Adriene trying to prove to Hawk she's from another century while also coming to grips with her feelings for him.
