"You can't make alliances with witches and suchlike and hope to avoid being drawn toward the dark."

As the Spook's apprentice, Thomas Ward's first duty is to protect the County from ghosts, boggarts, and other dangerous creatures. But now his mother has come back from her homeland to seek his help. One of the most dangerous of the old witches, Ordeen, is about to return to earth, bringing with her suffering and devastation. Tom's mother has mustered a powerful army -- including Tom's friend Alice, the Pendle witches, and the assassin Grimalkin -- to confront Ordeen. If Tom joins them, the Spook will refuse to take Tom back as his apprentice. What sacrifices will be made in the battle against the dark?

Characters edit see section history

  • Thomas Ward: A seventh son of a seventh son whose Mam is a witch. He is an apprentice spook.
  • John Gregory: Also known as the Spook A seventh son of a seventh son, he has kept the forces of the dark at bay for many years in the County. He has trained many apprentices, though precious few are any good, Tom will be his last.
  • Alice Deane: Revealed in the 5th book to be the daughter of Bony Lizzie and the Fiend, she is a firm friend of Tom; their friendship in fact keeping her from going over to the dark. According to Thomas' Mam, she could be the most powerful malevolent or benign witch ever.
  • Mam: Thomas's mother
  • Bill Akwright: A Spook who took in Tom in a previous book. He has three blood hounds.
  • Grimalkin: The assassin of the Malkin witch clan, she is a malevolent witch skilled with knives and scissors in combat. She nonetheless follows a strict code of honour, to the point where that when ordered to kill Tom, she regretted it as she would not be able to face him when he was at his prime, offering him a quick death (although he did survive). She has gained protection from the Fiend by bearing him a son. However her son was not a witch but an ordinary boy. The Fiend killed him, resulting in a grudge that has lead to Grimalkin allying herself with the Tom on more than one occasion.
  • The Fiend: The Devil, source of all evil and Alice's father.
  • Mab Moldheel: Powerful scryer, clan leader.
  • Beth and Jannet: Mab's sisters.
  • Mary: Jack and Ellie's daughter.
  • Seilenos: A Greek spook who is the exact opposite of Mr. Gregory.
  • Jack: Thomas's brother and owner of the farm. He was kidnapped by witches in the previous book.
  • Ellie: Jack's wife who has grown to fear when Tom comes to the farm.
  • James: Tom's borther who is a blacksmith and owner of a sucessful business.
  • Ordeen: The Fiend's ally and very evil witch who slaughters everything near her tower, the Ord, and has many dark allies.
