Parts were extremely boring and tedious. If you want to learn about meat packing, its great. The best parts were few and far between and heartbreaking. Overall, a depressing books but very true to the times.

The book changed an entire culture, and the result was cleaner food and more progressive employment practices in industry.

Sure it inspired changes the mass production of food, but the point of this book was not to talk about the unclean meat in Chicago, it was more about anarchy and socialist movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Another American "classic" whose changes proposed were not necessarily all for the better and whose content inspired cleaner, safer food for millions. I still don't know what goes in a hot dog, but at least they are USDA approved.
