How can anyone "review" Faust, or any other towering work of world literature? All one can do is comment on impressions. I picked this up to get in the mood to see the Hector Berlioz operatic setting to be presented in November by the Met. I've seen both Busoni and Gounod's versions, and I think it is a typical feature of any setting of the work that they can only portray a small portion of the text. Reading Faust, one can only be amazed and confounded by the breadth of Goethe's vision. The...
