Gothic & Lolita charts the trend of Gothic street fashion that has swept Japan over the last decade. Influenced by Western fashion trends from the mid 1980s, young teenagers, predominately adolescent girls, congregate in the urban centres of Harajuku, Akihabara and a number of underground clubs in and around Tokyo, dressed head-to-toe in gothic costumes and late-Victorian dress. The psychological characteristics of the average Japanese Goth is one of introversion and exclusivity. The majority of girls in the scene are teenagers and most usually stop dressing and behaving this way by the age of eighteen. The origin of the movement was in Osaka in the mid 1990s when young teenagers adopted Gothic fashion in response to the clothes worn and promoted by Japanese Gothic rock bands. In the ten years since the trend began it has expanded to a number of cities including Tokyo and now boasts many thousands of devotees who dedicate their lives to creating ever more flamboyant and bizarre variations on the Gothic theme

Overview

* The Japanese fashion phenomenon, born in the underground clubs of Tokyo and Osaka, has now made its way onto the streets
* Eccentric fashions, inspired by western Gothic, Victoriana and Rococo style have taken on a cultish following
* From the same family as Phaidon’s bestselling Fruits and Fresh Fruits, this is a new and exclusive collection of photographs taken in the downtown areas of Harajuka and Akihabara, by the cult photographer Masayuki Yoshinaga (b.1964)
* Hundreds of teenagers pose for the camera in their imaginative and often surreal outfits and offer personal insights into the ideas behind their personal fashion choices
* A mixture of high fashion and homemade items, their creations provide inspiration to professional and would-be designers, as well as teenagers and ‘Gothic’ fans

It was founded in 1999 and features the specific styles of Elegant Gothic Lolita, which blends the innocence and cuteness of the Lolita fashion with the darkness and mystery of Gothic fashion, and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat. Mana also founded a band called Moi Dix Mois in 2002.The label's name is a portmanteau of the French words "moi-même" (myself) and "moitié" (half), although the expression "moi-même-moitié" does not exist in French. It could also be interpreted as "my own part" or "my own space".Moi-même-Moitié's clothing is characterised by the use customised materials and couture-like construction. The brand's logo is a candle stick, which often appears as a design detail, for example as embroidery or on buttons, lace and jewellery. Other frequently used motifs are crosses, roses (with thorns), Gothic architecture and bat wings. The designs are most commonly black, white, grey and deep blue. Lace is also sometimes used.Moi-même-Moitié has branches in Tokyo and Hiroshima and also offers online ordering for both domestic and international customershttp://moi-meme-moitie.shop-pro.jp/

  • BABY, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT: Baby, The Stars Shine Bright (株式会社 ベイビー、ザ スターズ シャイン ブライト, Kabushiki Kaisha Beibī, Za Sutāzu Shain Buraito?) (Shortened to Baby or BTSSB) is the name of a Japanese clothing boutique chain created in 1988 by Akinori Isobe and his wife, Fumiyo. The original fashion house is located in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Baby, The Stars Shine Bright specializes in Lolita fashion, and like Manifesteange Metamorphose temps de fille, their main focus is the subcategory Sweet Lolita. Baby, The Stars Shine Bright has opened their first international retail store outside of Japan in Paris, France, and opened their first North American retail store in San Francisco, California, USA on August 15, 2009.The New York City branch of Kinokuniya occasionally sold clothing from the label, including dresses, headdresses, shoes and socks, but only received shipments sparingly. As mentioned in Shimotsuma Monogatari, the label's name was taken from the title of the album Baby the Stars Shine Bright by English pop music group Everything But the GirlHello Kitty and Charmmy KittyBaby, The Stars Shine Bright also sells other brand names such as a variant on the character Charmmy Kitty, Hello Kitty's pet cat. The Charmmy Kitty dolls they sell relate with the store's own gothic lolita and sweet lolita fashion style. Hello Kitty has played a role in the sweet lolita fashion as an on-side accessory. Since it is not easy to carry a Hello Kitty or Charmmy Kitty doll on the streets, the character instead might reside in the girl's bedroom, cellphone, accessories, and so on for decoration. In relation to Charmmy Kitty, Japanese author Novala Takemoto's POUR LOLITA version of Hello Kitty has become a prevalent icon among wearers. The character is often linked to Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, appearing wearing a pink bonnet and carrying a lacy handbag in the White Edition, strongly reminiscent of the fashions offered by this brand. There are also Punk Lolita Punk Edition versions and Gothic Lolita Gothic Edition versions, respectively dressed in tartan or black. The Hello Kitty POUR LOLITA style is no longer offered, due to Takemoto's 2007 arrestPour LolitaPour Lolita was Novala Takemoto's line of clothing as sponsored by Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. "God Save The Lolita" is the catch phrase of the Pour Lolita line. On September 3, 2007, Novala Takemoto was arrested for possession of marijuana, a violation of Japan's Cannabis Control Law. Baby, the Stars Shine Bright has since pulled Takemoto's line from their online store, as well as their retail stores, showing no affiliation with Takemoto.Alice and the Pirates"Alice and the Pirates" is a line of Baby, the Stars Shine Bright entirely pirate and pirate-punk themed. A store devoted to this line opened in Harajuku on the 25th of August 2006. It is located in the bottom floor of LaforetBaby and Kamikaze GirlsBaby, The Stars Shine Bright was featured in the movie, book, and manga of Shimotsuma Monogatari (English title "Kamikaze Girls"). One of the lead characters, Momoko, is obsessed with Baby clothing, and wears Lolita fashion throughout the story.http://www.babyssb.co.jp/

  • Kamikaze Girls (IMDb): Momoko is an ordinary girl, living an ordinary life. Ordinary, that is, if you define ordinary as wearing elaborate Lolita dresses from the Rococo period in 18th Century France. A complete fish out of water in her rural and sleepy Japanese town, where everyone buys their clothes (and everything else) at the same store and no one understands her, Momoko's life is one of sugared sweets and frilly treats. Desperate to make some money to pay for her expensive indulgence, Momoko tries selling bootleg Ver*ace and Uni*ersal Studios clothes left over from her Dad's yakuza (gangster) days. However, when punk girl and self-styled 'Yanki' Ichiko comes calling, her days as 'ordinary' are most certainly numbered... Friendship brings these two unlikely girls together
