Macbeth is the shortest of the Great Tragedies, and there is something in its brevity, in its air of hurtling irresistably toward catastrophe, that adds immeasurably to its greatness. Crime, retribution, the kingdom, the world: pretty much the entire universe, in Macbeth, spirals...

I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I am kind of neutral about it.

I first read this in high school, like most people do, and I loved the witches. Great story if shoddy history (which is true of most of Shakespeare's plays, I suppose). One of my favorites.

"Macbeth" is a book which everybody should have at their homes. It's a brilliant story about power and title. It shows us how far a man, who used to be the most loyal soldier, can go in order to become a king. His wife, Lady Macbeth, is one of the most powerful, affective and dominant characters in the book. It was her, who put pressure on Macbeth to be the king, like the withches, who Macbeth met while walking with a friend, said. It's a masterpiece; if you haven't, don't wait a second to read this book!

probably my favourite of Shakespeare's plays. interesting that the main character recedes instead of grows as the story continues. a decent-enough guy from the start, but oh how weak a man he was.

Just finished it. Seen the performance some time ago, that is, before I came to Scotland. Marveled at the womanly might of Lady Macbeth.

Shakespeare's finest IMHO. Very dark, cyclical, and cool. Can really mine a lot from a close text analysis, like we did in my Shakespeare class with the redoubtable Prof Don Foster.
