The Shelfari Reading Room 241 books / 187 members / 326 posts This group is for people of all ages who would like to exchange their reading experiences with others. Let's talk about our favorite books, what stories mean to us and why, and anything else that helps to describe our reading experiences.

I've added the link to a good online book club, Zooba, too... make a reading list and they'll send you the books
Shakespeare Groupies 83 books / 293 members / 278 posts Shakespeare covered it all. Love, Death, Comedy, Tragedy, Racism, Sexism, Anti-Semitism, most of the other ism's, Virtue, Power, Greed, Guilt, Redemption, Cross-dressing, and more cross-dressing. This group is for those that love plays by Shakespeare or by his contemporaries like Marlowe and Jonson. Post your favorite play, your favorite edition of his plays, and since plays are not meant to be read alone feel free to discuss movie adaptations, plays you have seen, modern re-tellings, anything Shakespeare is welcome!
Brilliant Babes (And Dudes) Who Read Selectively 639 books / 165 members / 7779 posts So, what makes you a selective reader? If you like Dan Brown, Danielle Steele, Nicholas Sparks, or similar works, you MAY not be into this club. We are a group of intelligent persons who love both thought-provoking literature and quality brain candy. Actually, I mainly started it for myself and my friends, but anybody can apply if you think you're down with the Brilliant Babes--just send someone a note explaining why YOU think you are a brilliant babe (or dude) who reads selectively. This is a super-casual group. Anybody can suggest a book to read, anybody can add books to the reading list. We welcome any and all intelligent book discussion (not to mention whining about books we hated or gushing about books we loved). And don't worry if you have a really embarrassing book on your shelves...we all have skeletons in the closet.

To ask for an invite please DO NOT use the admin message box, leave a note on the profile pages of either rob or Suze...we will get back to you as soon as we can...thanks for your patience...and if you insist on asking for an invite via the group admin message box you will be ignored...so don't. Also, please remember that, although we TRY to get to everyone's requests in a timely manner, we do have other responsibilities that sometimes delay us from looking at your shelves. Your patience will be rewarded

A note about being snobs: As hard as it is to believe, with all of the nice people here on Shelfari, we get an e-mail once every week or two saying that we are snobs. That really just depends on your definition of a snob. Yes, this is a private group. Yes, we jokingly call ourselves brilliant. Yes, we have rather defined reading tastes that cut out a lot of mass-market fiction. Does that truly make us snobs? We hand-picked many members of our initial group around what we like to read or think we'd like to read. I don't think this makes us so much snobs as "people who want to discuss the kind of stuff that they like to read and don't care to discuss stuff that they don't like to read." (shrugs) We're pretty accepting. So, before sending us mean e-mails, see above for the joining process. And just remember: If you don't make it in, you probably haven't read the same books that we've all read and we'd have nothing to talk about!

A special note from the admin: We want everyone to have a great time here. All we expect is that everyone plays nice! Good-humored sarcasm is in; putting down or harassing our members is not, and we won't hesitate to remove a repeat offender from the group.

Note on the threads: please feel free to go back and resurrect any of the earlier threads that you find interesting...

Crowell's IBers 9 books / 1 members / 0 posts Fellow Ribault IBers and book lovers (and non-lovers of books, because I know you're out there, too) - we'll use this group to discuss the books we are reading in class plus others that you find that might interest the group. I need not remind you, I hope, to keep your conversations at all times professional and nonjudgemental. Your grade will depend upon my ability to identify you, firstly, and upon your frequency and depth of participation. We'll talk about what that means. First off, let's start with Ellen Foster, your summer read. What's your general assessment of this book? Be candid, professional, and detailed in your discussions, please. Mrs. C.

Teen Fiction for Intellectual Youth 13 books / 31 members / 22 posts Being an author, it is hard for me to write such short descriptions but I will try to make this short, sweet, simple, and to the point. This group is primarily for teenagers (18+under) If you are an adult though and would like to join, no one is stopping you. Secondly, I created this group because I am a teenager that enjoys reading. Reading is like Candy. You can't get enough of it. I finish about 2 novels a week. If it's the summer i finish about one a day. Anyway, I believe reading and writing are very important. I hate that society believes that Teens should just read those happy, go-lucky type of novels. So this group is going to have all types of novels. Some adult ones, some children's ones. This group is for intellectuals that want to become even brighter. The shelf will consist of all genres and age leveled books. Sylvia Plath, J.D Salinger, Judy Blume, Edgar Allen Poe, and Ray Bradbury will become a common site for these members. I am encouraging all teens & young adults to join. This should be a very delightful experience. Always challenge yourself. You can't be dissapointed! Have a great day reading :]

Welcome to Across The Pond!

Do you ever find yourself suddenly walking silly walks or humming a certain Lumberjack tune? Do you scurry to the kitchen at noon for ladyfingers and herbal tea? Do you read literature from or about Tudor or Regency periods? Are you constantly flipping to BBC America to check for new episodes of Dr. Who, Robin Hood, or MI-5? Did you love Braveheart, Pride and Prejudice, or the Harry Potter movies? Do you ever suddenly find yourself speaking in a British accent using the words "bloke" or "codswallop" from time to time? Or maybe you just feel you were born in the wrong country? This group was made for anyone who feels a special connection to the geography, history, culture, and traditions of the U.K. Discussions are open to everyone and can be about anything from English literature, your favourite Beatle, or how you spent your summer vacation touring famous castles. Whether the discussions are serious and thoughful or silly and playful, have fun! *For any Shelfarian who has stumbled upon this group out of curiosity, please feel free to join us (especially you Brit's!)!*

SWS 18 books / 41 members / 29 posts Students and staff in SWS love to read! This space is a private group for us to share what we're reading both in class and outside the classroom. Please send a note to me (the administrator) after you've joined Shelfari and are ready to join our group. Be sure to use your real name in your note so that I know who you are and will invite you to join!

Then, get going adding books to your own bookshelf, and putting them on the group shelf too. Adding a review lets us know what you thought of the book. You can do this in a discussion post too - and ask others for recommendations.

All school rules apply. Please don't use your real name, and do not post a photo of yourself. Of course, any inappropriate conduct and/or language won't be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action. Please write responses that follow the conventions of standard written English!

Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read 679 books / 1011 members / 10331 posts Better than Starbucks… if you like good coffee, great books, sharp wit, and people who read Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Marquez, Morrison, Joyce, Faulkner, Cather, Kingsolver and a few hundred other really delicious writers, not to impress strangers, but because they love a good read, then please join us. We are not a private group, but the administrators will not resist the urge to delete boring and stupid comments. By the same token, personal attacks on young, slow or otherwise disadvantaged players will not be tolerated. Generally, be nice to other members, but spare not public figures, pop lit superstars, big box stores, politicians and religious leaders. Focus more energy on what is good and even what is great, but feel free to throw a stone when the occasion calls for it. Welcome!

SI-FAN 102 books / 48 members / 849 posts The Library closed its doors to the public. The members wandered off down the aisles in search of marvellous tales. And dust began to settle...a spider spun a web of delicious decadence. The Librarian stamped the immortal letters on a return "Once in never out".

In the dim shade the spectre of Poe appeared, a trailing hand casting eternity in the dust on well scratched tables, and a sob split the silence...followed by the "Hush!" of solitude.
A hand, scaled and sublime, rises from the watery depths, wiping away tears of yearning, mingling with the salt of bitter tides...oh the dreaming - the dreaming!
Enters the explorer, his hand trails the eternal dust, and posits an opinion, but his opinion flounders on the concourse of nothingness - for paradoxical is the truth when to be seen it has to be hidden, and to be truly alive is to die.
