This was a very good book, giving you an understanding of the Afghan culture through it's history as seen through the eyes of a woman who was born of an Afghan father and Indian mother in exile in Britain.

Saira Shah made a film called 'Beneath the Veil' for Channel 4 (UK) Dispatches series which was shown on CNN. I throughly enjoyed this book whilst I was reading it but it didn't make a lasting impression on me. On occasion I found her recollections too romanticised, not a heinous crime and one I can forgive her for. Shah's writing is very lyrical and paid homage to the storyteller in the title. An interesting and enjoyable read.

Beautifully written... a true story well-told.
